Meditation & Yoga Retreat: Awakening Body, Mind and Heart

Meditation & Yoga Retreat:

Awakening Body, Mind & Heart

June 23-28, 2017

with Janice Gates, Anne Cushman  &  Jill Satterfield

I am very excited to offer this unique retreat which I am co-leading with my two dearest long-time colleagues, Anne Cushman and Jill Satterfield. We are all deeply committed to the integration of embodied practice and meditation and sharing how these practices can support us – not just on the mat or cushion, but in the nitty gritty challenges of daily life. We have been bringing our pioneering efforts to this field for decades, leading programs at Spirit Rock Meditation center and beyond.

This peaceful retreat in the redwoods will be a timely opportunity to step away from the busyness of your life and the endless barrage of information and media in order to nourish your body, clear your mind and open your heart. Each day will be a seamless integration of movement, stillness, silence and connection. Practice will focus on unwinding the patterns of body and mind that inhibit our flow of aliveness, and include time to explore how you can live more fully in harmony with what is most meaningful in your own life. We’ll draw on the deep well of yoga, mindfulness and Buddhist wisdom to access and cultivate the ancient qualities that traditionally support awakening.

Includes dynamic and receptive yoga sessions, pranayama, walking and seated meditation and guided self-reflections woven with the wisdom teachings of yoga and Buddhism. There will be plenty of time for walking through the ‘enchanted forest’ at Land of Medicine Buddha, swimming in the spring water filled pool, taking a sauna, lounging on the sun deck, receiving a healing massage, or to simply be. Social silence will be held throughout the majority of the retreat, with time for getting to know the community of like hearted others as well.

*This retreat will also include an optional mentoring track for teachers interested in integrating yoga and mindfulness in their teaching, see below.

Our retreat will be held at Land of Medicine Buddha in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains on 108 acres of ancient redwood groves and sunny oak meadows. Enjoy the pure energy of this sacred land with many areas for contemplation and mediation, surrounded by prayer wheels, Buddhist statues, temples and the ‘Enchanted Forest’. There is a lovely swimming pool, sauna with outdoor showers, sun deck and ample space to restore and replenish.

Teachers Track

Daily afternoon sessions for teachers interested in integrating yoga and mindfulness are folded into the retreat – an invitation to dive a little deeper, lean into your edge and develop as a practitioner, as a teacher and as a human being. The safe container of a small group of like-minded practitioners and the support of three seasoned and compassionate guides creates this potent environment for inner and outer growth. The focus of these sessions will be working with both the practical and deeper dimensions of yoga and mindfulness in an integrated, embodied and down to earth way.

You will have an opportunity to clarify your intentions, work with patterns that may not be serving you and learn new tools for deepening your own practice and teaching. The sessions will be tailored to the needs of those attending (we will be sending out a questionnaire prior to the retreat to prioritize topics) and may include:

  • how to skillfully integrate the spiritual aspects of yoga and Buddhism
  • into your teaching in a down to earth, grounded way
  • navigate the complexities of the teacher-student relationship
  • keep your teaching creative, juicy and engaging for your students and for yourself
  • integrate mindfulness into any style of yoga: strong flow, gentle/restorative and anything in between
  • intelligently and effectively sequence your classes
  • incorporate meditation into your offerings
  • make a living while staying true to your values and vision
  • adapt your yoga to different contexts and environment
  • design daylongs, retreats, and other in-depth offerings that support your students development
    avoid burnout
